A legendary celebration of the music of Richard Wagner, the Bayreuth Festival adopted panthea.live over a week this summer 2026, as part of its first full-scale trial of the service. The test aimed to assess the compatibility of Panthea’s smart glasses, which display surtitles directly in spectators’ field of vision, with the artistic and historical requirements of a centuries-old festival.
Striking a balance between tradition and innovation
As a heritage event committed to Wagner’s vision of artistic purity, the Bayreuth Festival has long been wary of introducing surtitles that might interfere visually with the works’ staging. In response to growing demand from a largely international audience, our panthea.live smart glasses offered the festival an innovative compromise: making surtitles accessible directly within each spectator’s field of vision, without adding any visible display to the auditorium.
In collaboration with TAff e.V., the Friends of the Bayreuth Festival association, we made 20 pairs of smart glasses available to audiences at six performances. The results of this first trial will inform ongoing discussions about a potential permanent offering at future editions of the Festspiele.
An optimistic first assessment
The Bayreuth Festival team conducted a study among users of the surtitling glasses to gather their feedback. Panthea’s concept proved popular: audience members were particularly positive in their evaluation of the readability, synchronization and ease of use of the surtitles. Overall, 91% of respondents would recommend the experience — even for performances lasting up to six hours!
Audience members highlighted how the glasses allowed them to follow the words of each work, without taking their eyes off the stage. In a further demonstration of the system’s appeal, 21 of the 81 users said they had used the glasses again at multiple performances.
Overall, the trial has confirmed the potential of Panthea’s smart glasses to provide discreet, immersive surtitles adapted to major stages.
